Theif and The dogs- Stream of Consciousness Stream of consciousness is a literary technique in which the characters interior thoughts are revealed through a monologue which happens in the characters head. Stream of consciousness is used to give the reader an insight of the characters private thoughts and motions revealing to the reader clues about the characters emotions, mental condition, and intellect. In the Thief and the Dogs Naguib Mahfouz employs this literary technique throughout the novel in order to reveal to us the character of Said Mehran. Mahfouz applies this technique through out the novel. It is used to create a direct connection between Said and the reader; a clear path to his thoughts which isn't disturbed or influenced by any outside connection.
